A year ago, the first pill to treat a fundamental reason for cystic fibrosis (CF) hit the business sector, on account of beginning testing at Children's Hospital Colorado. "I begin crying uncontrollably of appreciation when I caught wind of it," says Jennifer Heinicke, whose 8-year-old girl, Annelise, was diagnosed with CF amid a standard infant screening. The medicine, called Kalydeco, focuses on a hereditary change that meddles with the vehicle of chloride in a few patients. "It worked beyond anything I could ever imagine," says Frank Accurso, M.D., leader of the healing facility's pulmonology division, who is currently trying a combo of Kalydeco and another pharmaceutical that would conceivably help up to 50% of the patients with CF. Since Annelise began taking the tablet last Valentine's Day, she hasn't missed school in view of breathing issues and has been playing soccer, climbing, and tap moving. Says Jennifer: "I can scarcely stay aware of her."
